Guizhou Open University (Guizhou Vocational Technology Institute) is a new-type higher education institution sponsored by People’s Government of Guizhou Province, dedicated to delivering open education, vocational education, and continuing education to society. Its predecessor was Guizhou Radio and TV University, established in 1979. In 2021, it was officially renamed Guizhou Open University with approval from the provincial government, operating jointly with Guizhou Vocational Technology Institute—founded in 2008—under a unified management system featuring “two names, one leadership team, and one staff body.” The university covers an area of over 800 mu (approximately 53 hectares), with a total construction area of nearly 240,000 square meters. It currently has 658 full-time faculty and staff members, including 221 with senior professional titles, 474 holding doctoral or master’s degrees, and 73.4% being dual-qualified teachers.
The university serves as a branch of the Open University of China and also functions as the Guizhou branch of the Seniors University of China, the Guizhou Provincial Community Education Guidance Service Center, and a provincial pilot unit for building the lifelong education “credit bank” system. It has established 10 open universities across cities (prefectures) and some industries throughout the province, along with 77 county-level open education colleges, forming a comprehensive educational network covering urban and rural areas and key sectors. The university offers 105 undergraduate and associate degree programs in open education, 10 in adult education, and 30 in higher vocational education. It hosts two provincial-level high-level major clusters—Civil Aviation Safety Technology Management and E-commerce—as well as two provincial-level distinctive backbone major clusters: Tourism Management (Aviation and Tourism Services) and Architectural Engineering Technology. Additionally, it features four provincial-level key majors: E-commerce, Architectural Engineering Technology, Tourism Management, and Software Technology. The campus includes 113 on-campus training bases and 79 off-campus training sites.
In recent years, the university has been recognized as a model higher vocational institution and a high-quality vocational college in Guizhou Province, and has been included in the “Double High Plan” initiative for higher vocational institutions. It has achieved outstanding performance for three consecutive years in provincial evaluations of Party building effectiveness in vocational colleges, ranking first in overall assessment. In 2024, its experience in industry-education integration and university-enterprise collaboration with Guizhou Civil Aviation Group was selected as a national typical case—the only one from Guizhou included by the Ministry of Education. In 2025, it won three gold, four silver, and one bronze medal at the World Vocational College Skills Competition. Currently, the university has nearly 100,000 enrolled students, including more than 70,000 in open and adult education programs and approximately 15,000 full-time higher vocational students. To date, it has cumulatively trained 570,000 undergraduate and associate degree graduates.
Over the next five years, the university will vigorously promote the “openness and integration” spirit of the new era, uphold the educational philosophy of “excellence through openness, strength through integration,” enrich and expand cultural development centered on “integration of cultures,” and earnestly fulfill the fundamental mission of cultivating virtue and talent. It will set two strategic goals “upgrading Guizhou Open University” and “elevating Guizhou Vocational Technology Institute to bachelor’s level”—and implement three major strategies: strengthening open education, expanding continuing education, and optimizing vocational education. The university will comprehensively advance four key initiatives: quality enhancement, talent foundation reinforcement, cultural immersion, and campus expansion. These efforts aim to drive transformative, distinctive, and leapfrog development, establishing a high-level, people-satisfying modern university.
